I'm pretty sure medieval Europe was generally considered approx.

"In the mid-6th century AD, two monks, with the support of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I, successfully smuggled silkworm eggs into the Byzantine Empire." as per my previous citation. This creates a Master-Slave relationship, to loosely borrow from Nietzsche, where both parties psychologically get programmed to keep carrying out their assigned roles.Įast of Omber our sailor will reach the Bay of Tusks, famed as the breeding grounds of walrus.Īnd soon thereafter, the intrepid seafarer will find himself crossing the heart of the Shivering Sea, where every rock and wave is ruled by the hairy men from the great island of Ib.Very well then, medieval Byzantium they are! Yandel is getting upset because the Omber princes don’t protect the young girls, nor their territory and resources - they just lay down for the Dothraki to take whatever they want. ^ Ah, such is the burden of being a young girl in a brutal world - you are always used as a trading commodity to be sold to whoever will exchange the highest profit or benefit. Those bold enough to continue still farther east will next pass the shores of the small, pastoral Kingdom of Omber, whose craven kings and feeble princes are best known for the grain, gems, and girls they pay the Dothraki horselords each year to be left unmolested. Sarnor and the Dothraki will be covered in sections later on. ^ Ahh, that is how Lorath has extra income streams as well - they colonized Morosh after the Sarnor were destroyed.

The ruins of Saath’s sister city Sarys, sacked and destroyed by a Dothraki khalcenturies ago, can be found across the width of the delta.īetween them, at another mouth of the great river, rises the Lorathi mining and fishing colony Morosh. Here stands Saath with its white walls, the last (and least, many say) of the great cities of the fallen Kingdom of Sarnor. ^ An endless, abundant feast for the crab population - how considerate of us humans to go to war for the sake of their future meals 😉ĥ0,000 sailors just like that - really drives home how much violence and fightinghumans do - these are two nations which pretty much are non-existent in ASOIAF, yet they have their own bloody histories which are just as intricate and millennia-spanning as anyone else’s.īeyond Bitterweed Bay lies the delta of the Sarne, the great north-flowing river whose many vassal streams drain much of central Essos. On Ib these waters are known as Battle Bay, whilst the Lorathi named them Bloody Bay.īy any name, a thousand sunken ships and the bones of fifty thousand drowned sailors are said to be strewn across the bay’s bottom, home to the crabs for which Bitterweed is renowned. There is no one else even remotely nearby to have dominion to the surrounding territories, outside of little old Lorath.Īnother dick move by Braavos - ending the Kingdom of Sarnor - more on Sarnor in the sections to come. Load up on seafood from Bitterweed Bay and export it down the Rhoyne to Norvos and other settlements.īitterweed is pretty far from Ib, but now that the Sarnor are no longer around, most of the territory from Ib to Lorath is unoccupied or unclaimed. ^ That must be how Lorath has any sort of economy whatsoever and still maintains a civilized governance to this day. The Boltons, Umbers, Hornwoods, Flints, and Skagosi don’t really have a huge investment or interest in the seas beyond their own shorelines.Įast of the Axe are the deep blue waters of Bitterweed Bay, where ships from Ib and Lorath have so oft contested for supremacy, and the last great war fleet of the Kingdom of Sarnor was sent to the bottom by the Sealord of Braavos.

So Braavos gets to bully this area and have a monopoly. Northwest of Essos is the entire North of Westeros, but outside of the Manderlys, who get all their fish from the Bite, no one really fishes much in deep seas. This gives more credence to them not caring about the Pentoshi slaves, only wanting to drive Pentos from its territories. ^ Braavos are kind of dicks when it comes to allowing other lands gaining prosperity and goods, including food. Together with banking and trade, fishing is one of the “three pillars” upon which the wealth and prosperity of Braavos is founded.

The westernmost reaches of the Shivering Sea, from Skagos and the Grey Cliffsto the delta of the Sarne, are the richest fishing grounds in the known world.Ĭod and herring are especially abundant here.įisherfolk from lands as distant as the Three Sisters (in the west) and Morosh (in the east) have been known to work these waters … but they do so at the sufferance of the Free City of Braavos, whose fleets dominate the seas northwestof Essos, protected by their Sealord’s warships.
